Blavin Scholars

The Blavin Scholars Program promotes success for University of Michigan students who were formerly in foster care. In addition to financial support, this program provides life skills support to all such scholars.
The Blavin Scholars Program at Michigan started in 2009. To date, there have been 15 graduates of this program, including a Fulbright Scholar. In 2014, the program has 15 Blavin Scholars enrolled.
There has not been a Blavin Scholar withdraw since 2010 and only 2 scholars withdraw since the 2009 launch. By way of reference, only approximately 2% of youth from foster care in the US graduate with a 4 year degree. Thus, this program represents an excellent example of how bespoke programs involving committed youth backed by institutional support, can make a difference in young people’s lives.
We have know the Blavins for over 20 years, admire the work they are doing and thus help support the program financially as well as providing advice for graduating scholars interest in advanced degrees.
